THE STORY SO FAR
I confess: I’m an avid reader of the New York Times wedding announcements. I’m one of those people who religiously scans the Vows section every Sunday. I even watch the videos online.

There’s no better escape from my own banal reality than to read optimistic tales of romance that make me feel like we can all find a summa cum laude Harvard grad (who happens be descended from Thomas Jefferson) in our local bar.

Whatever your level of interest in Vows, they’re an institution. Enough so that there was a bit of an uproar lately when many of us opened up our Sunday papers to find a tale of infidelity leading the announcements.

This past week’s headliners, Carol Anne Riddell and John Partilla, have caused a huge backlash, with hundreds of angry comments and an enormous amount of media attention.

In brief: Former TV reporter Riddell, 44 and ad exec Partilla, 46, were married to other people when they met at their kids’ Upper West Side school. Full Post…

Honoring loved ones who are no longer with them is something many couples want to incorporate into their wedding.  Paying homage to those of late who played important roles in the brides and groom’s life is a moving and meaningful experience.

Couples may choose to incorporate private details into their wedding.  The bride may wear a piece of jewelry or an accessory that was given to her by the person being honored.  She may have a written prayer dedicated to that person ensconced in her bouquet.  The groom may carry a trinket in his lapel pocket or wear cufflinks given to him by the departed.

For those who want the sentiment to be shared with guests, there are tasteful ways to recognize the person’s memory.  A poem or dedication can be read.  The bride or groom, a friend or relative or whomever performed the ceremony can read it either during the ceremony or at the reception.  A picture of the person or pictures of the remembered with the bride and groom may be displayed on the gift table or with the sign-in book.  A written dedication can be added to the programs.

As I mentioned earlier this weekend, I spent Labor Day attending the most awesome wedding I’ve ever been to. Granted, it probably meant that the bride, groom, and both sets of parents bled money consistently for the past year, but there were some non-financial lessons to be learned as well. Here are a few:

  1. A forced vacation means everyone has fun. These particular nuptials were only about two hours away, but the fact that I was out of town, not worrying about getting home after the party, and in vacation mindset meant that I was in fun mode all weekend.
  2. Encourage bonding. This could mean planning introductions between friends and couples you think will get along, or simply getting everyone together before the big day, either at someone’s house or at a bar. If you’ve danced together once, you will dance together again.
